Maths
At Lingfield, we believe maths should be exciting, hands-on and purposeful, with clear connections to real life. We aim to develop confident, resilient mathematicians who approach challenges with curiosity and strong reasoning skills. We foster a love of mathematics by creating an environment in which all children experience success and develop confidence in exploring the mathematical world around them.
Our curriculum follows a carefully sequenced mastery approach, built upon the concrete–pictorial–abstract progression. Learning is structured in small, coherent steps so that concepts are developed securely and cumulatively over time, enabling children to gain deep conceptual understanding alongside fluency.
In Early Years and Key Stage 1, we prioritise the development of secure number sense and early calculation strategies. Through a balance of adult-led teaching and child-initiated exploration, key mathematical concepts are introduced through play-based learning and carefully planned daily inputs. Continuous provision encourages reasoning, problem-solving and independent exploration, enabling children to build confidence while developing fluency and conceptual understanding.
In Key Stage 2, children deepen their understanding across number, calculation, fractions, geometry, measure and statistics. Children deepen their fluency, strengthen conceptual understanding and apply their learning to increasingly complex reasoning and problem-solving tasks.
By the end of Key Stage 2, children demonstrate accuracy, efficiency and flexibility in their mathematical thinking. They can explain their reasoning clearly, select appropriate strategies and apply mathematics confidently across a range of contexts.
White Rose Maths
At Lingfield, we use a scheme called White Rose Maths to underpin our planning and to ensure that knowledge, concepts and procedures are carefully sequenced to build upon previous learning. The scheme is broken down into small, manageable steps (cognitive load) and regularly revisits key concepts for retrieval practice. We supplement our maths curriculum with Numbots (EYFS/KS1) and Times Tables Rockstars (Y2-Y6) which are used in class and for homework. The aim of this is to develop fluency with basic number facts and times tables.
