Surrey Healthy Schools

We are very proud to share that we have successfully developed a Surrey Healthy Schools Approach.
We have been awarded the kitemark to become 1 of only 50 primary schools in Surrey to be able to use this in recognition of developing effective practice to promote and support wellbeing, health, inclusion and achievement.
Surrey Healthy Schools is built on a whole‑school approach to physical, social, emotional and mental health, linking health directly to behaviour and achievement.
Core principles
- Whole‑school health and wellbeing: A healthy school promotes physical, social, emotional and mental health and equips pupils, staff and families with the skills and attitudes to make informed health decisions.
- Health linked to achievement: It explicitly recognises that investing in health and wellbeing supports improved behaviour, engagement and academic outcomes and commits to continuous improvement in these areas.
Environment and ethos
- Healthy, inclusive culture: The ethos, culture and environment promote emotional and physical wellbeing, with pupils actively involved in decisions that affect health (e.g. food, activity, mental health initiatives).
- Whole‑community involvement: Parents, governors, staff and pupils are all engaged in improving children’s health, wellbeing and happiness, often through shared initiatives and communication.
Curriculum and PSHE
- Strong PSHE/RSHE offer: Schools embed social, emotional learning and health education in PSHE to build emotional literacy, resilience and decision‑making around lifestyle, relationships and mental health.
- Evidence‑informed practice: Surrey promotes trauma‑informed, strengths‑based approaches and provides PSHE resources to ensure teaching supports the wider Health and Wellbeing Strategy.
Leadership, evaluation and accreditation
- Strategic leadership: Named leads coordinate healthy‑schools work, aligning it with local strategies (emotional wellbeing, suicide prevention, active travel, food standards) and school improvement priorities.
- Ongoing review and accreditation: Schools complete self‑evaluation against healthy‑schools criteria, implement actions and maintain standards to keep their Surrey Healthy School status, which is reviewed periodically.
