Contexts for Learning
What Are Contexts for Learning?
Our Contexts for Learning are carefully chosen topics drawn from the History, Geography, and Science areas of the National Curriculum. These topics drive the learning across each half term, providing a meaningful focus that brings different subjects together. Wherever it is relevant and purposeful, we make strong links across the curriculum—such as in English, Art, or Design Technology—so that children can explore their learning in a rich and connected way. This approach helps pupils see how knowledge fits together, making their learning more engaging, memorable, and meaningful.
Building Understanding Through Concepts
At our school, each half term's learning is shaped by a key concept—Legacy, Transformation, Process, or Comparison. These concepts underpin our Contexts for Learning and act as powerful threads that connect subjects across the curriculum. By focusing on one concept at a time, children are supported to make meaningful links in their learning, deepen their thinking, and revisit these big ideas as they move through the school. This approach allows pupils to build a layered, growing understanding of each concept over time, helping them to see the bigger picture and apply their knowledge.
